Hello there,

So, starting a business…not on the to do list for most people I bet. Being an accountant and knowing about business does not necessarily mean that you can be a businessperson or entrepreneur. Sorry for those accountants that are offended, but I bet the last personality profile you completed did not indicate that you have the traits that most entrepreneurs are known for. And neither have I really, but here I am following the path less travelled and hoping you will join me along the way.

It has been quite a journey so far and we’ve only been in business for a week. Getting everything done to hit the ground running seems simple, but there is quite a lot to do and consider that one does not normally deal with from the accountant or consultant side of the table.

And here was my first lesson, you can never do or think of everything yourself. You must get and accept help along the way. And therein was my second lesson, there are many people that are just as eager to see you succeed as yourself, and who are willing to help you get started on that journey. A big thank you to those who have lent a helping hand to this point – now it’s my responsibility to ensure that your efforts have not been wasted.

During 2018 I read a book by entrepreneur, Nicholas Haralambous, titled ‘Do. Fail. Learn. Repeat.’ The main lesson I took from the book is that most of us underachieve because of the fear of failure. With that fear how did any of us ever learn to walk? If our fear of failure did not beat us when we were in diapers, why are we being bested by it now? It also did not teach me that my business will fail. While it remains a distinct possibility, the message I received was that in business you will never get it right all the time, but that is OK if you learn and no one died or got bankrupted along the way. Then the cycle is repeated. By accepting that we will sometimes fail, at least we get to “do” something new or different – take that path less travelled that may make all the difference.

Unfortunately, as employees most people are not celebrated for being different, making a change or learning from their mistakes. I must admit that, unless you or your employer are in the business of saving lives, these things should not necessarily mean a career ending or limiting move.  

Is this going to be a newsletter/blog about tax or business – you bet. Will we focus on what is right and what is wrong – you bet. Will we have fun along the way – We hope so.  Do. Fail. Learn. Repeat.
