Tributum Newsletter #34

Hello

I cannot believe its already 2 weeks since the previous newsletter. Time flies when you are having fun…or not as I am sure most of us are/were running flat out. But that is the thing with running. You can only go so fast for so long before you get tired, things start hurting and you have to stop. And rest. Like now, during this festive season.

But stop, completely. Yes, limber down so the muscles don’t get too tight but after that grab a bottle of water (or something else) and rest. You deserve it. And for those that believe stopping is not an option remember the words of Denzel Washington “Don’t confuse movement with progress”. You cannot fill a cup from an empty kettle. Refill the kettle, get some rest. It’s a weapon.

For some this is also a time of reflection. What was good about the past year? What was bad? What worked, what did not? What is worth fixing and what is not? And it’s a time for planning ahead, making those new year’s resolutions. You know, the ones that you tend not to stick to past the 10th…. I know I have shared some thoughts during the past year but as I sit here and think about what to write I am doing my reflection and here are some final thoughts for 2021:

  • It is OK not to be OK. I know it has almost become a cliché but it is true. No one is happy all the time, Facebook is just a highlights reel. Its not a life real.
  • Don’t play the victim. It’s too easy, and for some people it has become an addiction, the competition f comparing and outdoing each other’s “un-OK ness”. If you are not OK, do something about it. Don’t choose not to be OK. That is not OK.
  • Good enough is, well, good enough. You don’t have to be perfect and neither does what you do. Good enough gets the job done most of the time. Realise that you are good enough. That does not mean that you should strive to improve, but at least you can then focus on doing it for the right reasons. You are good enough. Maybe that realisation can also help you feel more OK.
  • You are ready. Waiting till you are ready will take the rest of your life and leave you with regrets. Like being good enough, know that you are ready. Now spend the rest of your life “doing” rather than “waiting”.
  • Regret is harder to deal with than failure. Wayne Gretzky said that you will miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take. Every chance not taken is an opportunity lost, already doomed to be a failure. I’m not suggesting that you gamble, but not taking any chances will lead to regret. Do, fail, learn, repeat. You did it when you learned to walk, what’s your excuse now?

Have a great festive season. Rest, and look after yourself. When sitting in traffic or standing in a long queue this festive season be kind. Be the person that you want the other people to be. May the best of 2021 be the worst of 2022. Travel safely, stay safe, and above all, keep breathing.
